With the new lighting, we have not only brought more life to the streets. In addition, there is an annual operating saving. We have actually got what we wanted and a little more.
Bettina Jensen, Hjørring Municipality
Hjørring city centre has undergone a significant transformation with the Vand i Midtbyen project, which combines climate adaptation, urban space improvements and innovative lighting. The aim has been to create a more attractive urban space that invites people to stay, socialise and feel safe during both the day and evening hours.
A city of light and movement
A central part of the project has been the lighting, which not only functions as basic lighting, but also adds a dynamic and atmospheric expression to the urban spaces. The lighting design highlights the existing architecture and creates visual experiences that invite citizens to explore the city center. Among the many lighting elements are interactive light installations, specially designed masts and functional fixtures that adapt to the needs and use of the urban space.
An urban space project in two stages
The project has been implemented in two stages and includes a number of central urban spaces:
Fountain Square: Here, scenographic lighting has been created, where the light supports the sculpture The Ring by simulating the shadow course of daylight 12 hours apart.
St. Olai Square: A combination of basic lighting and dynamic lighting elements creates a welcoming transition to the nearby parking area.
Basin Square: Here, the lighting invites you to stay and socialize through atmospheric lighting.
Stromgade: Integrated lighting in bollard benches and uplights on trees create an inviting and sensory experience.
The Rambla: Innovative lighting design with a slowly pulsating light and an interactive lighting effect activated by motion sensors.
Mammoth Square: Safe and clear lighting, where point spotlights and scenographic lighting create coherence with other urban spaces.
The Green Belt: Light highlights paths, living areas and the urban space's waterways.
Sustainability and technological innovation
The project has a clear sustainable profile. By switching to energy-efficient LED luminaires, the municipality will achieve significant operating savings, while the lighting will add more experiences to the urban space.
The luminaires are modular and can be continuously upgraded in line with technological advances, and they are part of a circular value chain where materials are recycled after the end of their useful life.
The lighting design in Vand i Midtbyen is not only functional, but also experience-oriented. By varying the lighting, a dynamic city center is created that appeals to different user groups – from families and the elderly to young people walking through the city.
Safety, visual comfort and the ability to adapt the lighting to events and holidays are essential factors in the design.
